Our First Border Crossing Since the End of the World as I Knew It

Strasbourg/Khel Bridge by Paul Jann 2020

We made it to Germany!  If you zoom into the upper right part of the picture you will see the bridge I crossed today at Great Risk to personal well being and property just because I wanted my first post-Covid border crossing to be on the bridge that is one of the symbols of the EU…  The fact is that this never actually became a hard border because many of the people that work in Kehl, Germany are actually French living in Strasbourg.   The crossing was just subject to random checks (which I have no pretense to challenge).

G has been forced to take some vacation so that means I don’t have as much responsibility to make sure we stay in 4g coverage as usual. Sadly I have to be back in Strasbourg Thursday for the dentist so we are not going very far. We actually decided to stay two nights here in the German suburbs of Strasbourg, France. I love living in France, but I prefer the German pharmacies. Many things cost less in Germany, but not a lot less. The food is mostly better in France, but you have to go to Germany for bacon. The biggest difference is that the average French person speaks English as well as the average reasonably well-educated American speaks French. That is to say that most French speak enough English to try to be polite. Somehow, almost everyone in Germany speaks flawless English, and usually with the proper American accent. It’s been a fun though stressful few weeks living in a glorified van in France. I need a break. I’m hoping the stress of not being able to read the signs as easily is offset by more verbal English and politer drivers.

Oh, and if it wasn’t obvious, there’s a pub in this campground that serves a nice local German Pilsner.

  2. Thank you Susan. Do you realize how much of an inspiration you have been to our lifestyle? When I met you, you had just repatriated after working in Germany. The little wheels in my brain started turning.
